As a gamer, we've always been in that position to choose whether or not to buy a gaming laptop or desktop. Some often make the wrong decision on which to buy. In this article I hope to make it more clear when deciding on which to buy.
Desktops

Lets start by discussing gaming desktops. For starters, gaming desktops a higher bang for your buck when considering performance, power, and accessories included right out of the box. Not to mention, desktops provide more room for upgrades opposed to laptops. Since desktops have a larger shell, they can fit a wider variety of components, as well as larger, more powerful components, so as time passes, it is much easier to upgrade which allows it to last longer.
Desktops also provide more room for accessories such as keyboards, mice, and monitors. Laptops can have these accessories added too, but it tends to make the setup weird since a keyboard and monitor are built into the device. Having these accessories separate from the unit takes its toll on portability. It is extremely difficult to lug around a giant desktop. You also don't have the option to bring your desktop to public places and class to work or play games.
Laptops

Now lets discuss laptops. Laptops just work right out of the box very little to no assembly whatsoever. However, laptops are a lot more limited than desktops. Laptops for starters cost a fair amount more than a desktop would to get the same power and performance. Some laptops can peak into the $5,000 mark. With this though, gaming laptops have come a long way as technology has evolved so you can find desktop level power and performance in the $1,000 range.
Since laptops are in a small shell, there really isn't much room for upgrades. What you buy is basically what you have to stick with for it's lifetime. Laptops also usually don't come with accessories that desktops do such as disk drives, but those can be added on with adapters. Portability is a huge selling point for these laptops as you can take them practically anywhere since it is just a laptop. These laptops are also versatile as a beefy work laptop.
For those who like powerful laptops for homework and studying, gaming laptops are the way to go. High end regular laptops tend to be around the same price while offering lower performance compared to gaming laptops.
Conclusion
All in all it really comes down to portability and power and performance. Gaming laptops mix great power with the luxury of portability and versatility while desktops are more for a stationary at home use with unbeatable power and customization.
