How to Upgrade Your PS4 Hard Drive Space.

Updated: Dec 10, 2018

With the growing size of modern video games, the stock hard drive space on your PlayStation suffers tremendously. Older consoles have a harder time with this as they only had 500GB. This amount of space will only hold a handful of games in modern standards. Sony began to somewhat fix this issue with the offering of a 1TB PlayStation, but even these suffer from low storage space after a while. But fear no more, in this post I will teach you how to upgrade your storage space.

Things You Will Need:

  • PS4 (duh)

  • Upgraded Hard Drive (also duh)

  • Model Number (found on a sticker on the back of the console)

  • Philips Screwdriver

  • USB Stick

  • Computer with Access to the Internet

Step 1: Backing Up Your Data/Game Saves

Before you get to installing the new hard drive, you will want to backup all your game saves. You can do this by uploading the data to the cloud if you are a PlayStation Plus subscriber, or by using a USB stick. To back up your data with a USB stick, follow these instructions.

*to back up saved data, one must be updated to the most recent system software and be signed in to PSN*

1. Plug in a USB stick into the console.

2. Select "Settings" from the home screen.

3. Select "Application Saved Data Management" then "Saved Data in System Storage" then "Copy to USB Storage Device."

4. Select the game titles you wish to back up.

5. Once finished selecting, select "Copy."

6. After the data is finished copying, remove the USB stick.

Step 2: Removing the Hard Drive

The removing process is different for each different console model number. This is where it is important to know which model you have. Check the model number and follow which process to follow.

In order for the newly installed hard drive to function with your system, you must install the system firmware. Follow these steps to do so.

3. Download the new update from (here) and save the file as "PS4UPDATE.PUP" in the "UPDATE" folder.

4. Remove the USB once the download is complete.

Now it is time to actually install the firmware to the system itself.

2. Plug the USB into you system and hold down the power button for 7 seconds to start the system in safe mode.

3. Select "Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)."

*You must be signed into the same PSN account used when originally copying over the data*

1. If not plugged in already, plug in your USB into your system.

2. Select "Settings" from the home screen.
